Glorify God and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by welcoming all neighbors home to grow in faith and serve Christ. 

Jesus did not simply tell us to serve—he showed us what serving looks like. He took up a towel, knelt before his disciples, and washed their feet. He reminded them that “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:27–28). In Jesus, service is not about status or recognition. It is an expression of love.

That is what the Lakeside Serve Team is all about.

Our Serve Team is made up of the people who help make ministry happen each week at Lakeside. You might serve with our children or youth, read Scripture or make announcements during worship, welcome neighbors as a greeter or usher, or help in one of the many other places where your gifts can make a difference.

Every act of service—whether it happens on a stage, in a classroom, at a doorway, or behind the scenes—can become a powerful testimony of God’s love. When we serve, we participate in the ministry of Jesus and learn to imitate the One who wrapped a towel around his waist and served his friends (John 13:1–17).

Serving is one of the ways we live out Lakeside’s mission to welcome home all our neighbors to grow in faith and serve Jesus Christ. We do not need to be experts, and we do not serve because the church simply needs jobs filled. We serve because Jesus has served us, and gratitude moves us to serve others.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 – Two are better than one because they can accomplish more together.

Hebrews 10:24–25 – Do not stop meeting together. Encourage one another toward love and good works.

Galatians 6:2 – Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way fulfill the law of Christ.

Psalm 133:1 – How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.

These passages point to a consistent theme throughout Scripture:

IF FAITH IS A JOURNEY: HOW DO YOU LEARN WHERE TO GO? HOW TO YOU GET THERE?

How do we grow in faith? How can we recognize whether our faith is flourishing, dormant, or beginning to wither? What causes faith to take root and bear fruit? Again and again, Scripture points us toward community.

Faith grows when we are planted among other people who are pursuing God. Community gives us a place to learn, ask questions, pray, wrestle, encourage, serve, and grow together. That is why Hebrews tells us not to give up meeting together. It is why Ecclesiastes reminds us that two are better than one. And it is why Paul describes Christians as the body of Christ—each of us is an individual part, but we become the body together.  Together we learn fulfill the law of Christ. Together we create something good and pleasant to God.

We were never meant to follow Jesus alone.

Recently I read the line, “Most people don’t lose their faith in a crisis. They lose it alone.” There is something powerful in that reminder. When life becomes difficult, we need people who will help us remember what we believe, carry what has become too heavy, and point us back toward Jesus.

So how can we fight for faith together? How can we intentionally create the kind of community where faith grows?

PRACTICING THE WAY:

This fall, I want to invite you to an eight-week class on Spiritual Formation. Together, we will explore how Christian faith is formed, practices that help us grow closer to Christ, and ways we can help one another mature as disciples.

But this class is about more than gaining information. My hope is that it becomes a starting point for deeper community at Lakeside—developing small-group members, facilitators, and leaders who can help create places where people pursue Jesus together.

Because faith was never meant to grow alone. We grow in Christ as we grow together.

If you have a third grader and you are interested in third grade Sunday, please contact Pastor David with any Sunday's that will be a problem for your family. If you have a fourth or fifth grader who has not received a Bible we would be happy to include them!!
