Hey Lakeside Family,
We have started lent and maybe you grew up practicing lent and maybe lent is still new to you, either way I am happy to be journeying with you and I hope this helps your journey. Many people give things up for lent. Catholics often give up meat (beef and pork) on Fridays, hence you may see fish frys this season. Others give up chocolate or alcohol. But some choose to take on a practice, like waking up earlier to pray and sit with God. I have begin leaning towards the latter.
This year, I would like you to consider some practices to try. I will be preaching a series called "Un-Hurry" and it is based on a book called "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer. You don't have to read the book to go on the journey. This first week I will diagnose an illness many of us face, "hurry sickness". Then throughout lent I will discuss practices to help us overcome hurry sickness and enjoy greater fellowship with Christ. Each week you may try 1-2 practices to see if you can add them to your life.
Hurry sickness is a mixture of anxiety and restlessness, and is often accompanied by a continual feeling of urgency. Hurry sickness is connected to burnout and often is a warning sign that burnout is on the horizon. This Sunday I'm going to start by talking about the problem and why it even matters for followers of Jesus. I will also give you links in the newsletter each week pertaining to the series, including videos for further thought and the sermon series blog post.
I pray that, "according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." Ephesisans 3:16-19 NRSV
Grace and Peace,
David
